The Tremendous Tales of Tappy’s Travels : Episode 3 – Things are heating up!

Part of an ongoing series about a horse named Tappy leaving her town to discover the world beyond her stable. New episode posted every other Sunday. Scroll down to start at the beginning.

Tappy’s excitement quickly started to fade
As she entered a path that had no trees or shade
The sun’s angry rays blazed on Tappy’s course hair
She was parched but there were no signs of water anywhere

As her hoof burned against the hot gravel
She kept trying to remind herself of how far she had traveled
She wanted to stay strong and remain steadfast
But she really didn’t know how much longer she would last

She began to doubt her journey and what she was fighting for
She remembered she was fighting to prove herself, but what else more?
She started to forget the reason she took her journey due to the blistering heat
She wanted to continue but her body felt beat

Tappy thought about Puffer, her town, and what she was trying to discover
With some mental pep talk, reaffirmation of her goals, her body began to recover
It seemed as if she had gotten out of her hump
When she realized that she was no chump

Tappy never gave up and wasn’t going to start now
Despite any obstacles, she would always succeed someway somehow
Tappy had grown thick skin from being from the poorest of all stalls
She had always learned to get up whenever she’d fall

Then she remembered a time when she felt like she couldn’t go on
And Puffer stayed by her side and told her to stay strong

Tappy thought about Puffer, her town, and what she was trying to discover
With some mental pep talk, reaffirmation of her goals, her body began to recover
It seemed as if she had gotten out of her hump

Despite any obstacles, she would always succeed someway somehow
Tappy had grown thick skin from being from the poorest of all stalls
She had always learned to get up whenever she’d fall

“For too long I’ve been tied down because it is my state of mind,
But nothing can stop me oh no, not my kind
I’m a warrior, valiant and true
If I don’t fight hard for what I want then who is going to?”

So facing the heat, Tappy continued on her way
Thinking about next place that she would reach one day
“Although this present place isn’t necessarily the best,
I’m going to keep on moving and look forward to the rest”

The Tremendous Tales of Tappy’s Travels: Episode 1 – The Departure

Tappy was your average horse, from your average town
Her tail was quite course, her hair a dirt brown
Tappy never excelled in many games or sports
She wasn’t exactly the same of any type of sorts

In fact Tappy was quite plain in poise and in stance
Her awkward appearance didn’t give her much of a chance
You see in Tappy’s community it was all about looks
And well Tappy wasn’t a fair mare in any of their books

The town was divided in ranks determined by certain breeds
Mares, broodmares, stallions, and the noblest of steeds
In Tappy’s town, she was the lowest rank of all
She grew up in the poorer parts of town in the poorest of all stalls

However, Tappy with her positivity told herself times and times before
“You’re not the prettiest mare out there but at least you’re no bore”
So with that Tappy always managed to hold her head up high
To walk with a purpose, talk with a cause, and preach to the sky

Though Tappy always tried to stay strong, it sometimes got tough
To not have others see her as lovable but instead persistent and rough
Tappy had learned from her experiences to always put up her walls
Because she knew the lower you kept them the harder you’d fall

Because of this, she did not have many friends
But the one she did have made her quite content
Her friend Puffer was the only one who understood Tappy quite well
She was the only mare able to bring Tappy out of her shell

Puffer was a different breed of horse with hair quite fine
She would sometimes make fun of Tappy’s hair, but it never got out of line
Puffer was a lighter shade of brown, a healthy tint of medium beige
Her eyes were small, but expanded quite largely when enraged

The two would frolic and play
Laugh and talk all day
Share ambitions for their lives of tomorrow
Lament and cry about all of their sorrows

So it was in Puffer that Tappy shared her biggest secret ever
Tappy told Puffer about her bold endeavor
She would leave her town and venture on her own
Leave her stall and everything else she has known

Puffer gasped and huffed upon hearing the tale
She asked Tappy, “Do you know what that entails?”
Tappy replied, “Of course I do, you silly goose. I’ve thought about this through and though.”
Puffer said, “Well as your friend, you have my support, but I’m coming with you.”

“As much as I would love to have you by my side,
I know you have your own dreams and I have mine
But our paths will cross again, don’t you fret and fray
And when we meet again, my, that will be a glorious day”

So with that, Tappy began trotting on her epic quest
With nothing more than a satchel of supplies—no more, no less
As she proudly walked away from the place she used to call home
She was nervous yet excited for the places she would explore and roam

The Homework Race

I hate doing homework
It’s not very fun
But mom says I can’t watch TV
Until it is completely done

So with my pencil I scribble
Putting words on the page
Racing against the clock
Sweat dripping every which way

With only 15 minutes left
Before my favorite show
I hold my homework proudly up
And say, “Mom, here you go!”

She took a look, shook her head
And said, “No TV tonight!”
“You may have done your homework,
but you didn’t get a thing right!”

Jump in Puddles!

By: Vina Vo

On this rainy Saturday I sit inside
With nothing interesting to do
I dream of monkey bars and fast moving slides
Of skies sunny and blue

But blue is how I feel today
My spirit down in the dumps
With nothing more to really say
I might as well just have the mumps

The TV is on, but nothing is on
Morning cartoons have already passed
I wish the rain would just be gone
So I can go play outside at last

But then I get the brilliant plan
As I see mud puddles right outside
I could go outdoors and jump around
Maybe even lay on my belly and slide

Happily I dance in the rain
And hop in brown wet pools
My clothes begin to stain
And my body becomes real cool

Dad hollers for me to come indoors
For I will get a cold
I drag the wetness to the floors
And my, does my dad scold

The next day the sun came out
Warm, blue and bright
But I stay in and just pout
Because I got really sick that night

Inspired by: Neil Degrasse Tyson

Neil Degrasse Tyson: Okay, nothing thing—so if it’s raining out, there’s a big puddle—what do you want to do with that puddle?

Girl: Jump in it.

Tyson: You wanna jump in it… so do you parents let you jump in it?

Girl: Y-no.

Tyson: Well tell your parents Doctor Neil deGrasse Tyson said you should jump in the puddle.

The Box of Lost Items

By: Vina Vo

On her birthday a magical box appeared
One she had never seen
In her room, by her bed, it stood still
Glowing a fluorescent green

Slowly she approached the mystery
With great caution and great care
What could it be? She wondered
What could be in there?

Reaching for the box’s flaps
She lifted them one by one
And what she saw inside of it
Left her pleasantly stunned

The box contained items
She had lost for all she knew
But how did they get in there?
This couldn’t possibly be true

She sorted through them gleefully
Looking at old socks, books, and toys
She found homework, pencils, and hairbands
Even some poems she wrote about boys

She found letters from friends
A sweater she forgot at the park
She even found a camping flashlight
The one she had dropped in the dark

So many wonderful treasures
All neatly packaged and tucked
She couldn’t wait to tell her mother
Of her incredible birthday luck

She ran to go find her
To share in this amazing surprise
She knew she didn’t really lose all those things
They were just hidden somewhere, in disguise

Reluctantly her mom came
To see what the fuss was for
But to the girl’s dismay
The box was gone, her items lost once more

Get Well Soon

By: Vina Vo

For Adam

I wish upon the stars
And I wish upon the moon
That you my dear friend
Will quickly get well soon

You may be feeling crummy
That things are going wrong
But I know you’ll get through it
Because you are brave and strong

Some days are harder than others
That is simply how things go
But brighter days are up ahead
Just give it some time to show

Remember that you are a fighter
With will as mighty as could be
And when that isn’t enough
Then you can always call on me

I will always have a joke handy
And even a compliment or two
Just keep your spirits up
You’ll soon be good as new

The Kid Detective

By: Vina Vo

The cookies are missing
The culprit couldn’t have gone far
Who could have done it?
Who stole cookies from the cookie jar?

This is a case for The Kid Detective
The wisest detective around
The Kid Detective can solve any mystery
And make sure the cookies are safe and sound

The detective looks for fingerprints
But the lid has been wiped clean
The detective then uses a magnifying glass
To look closely at the scene

Crumbs on the floor
Creating a neat little trail
Leading the detective to the cookies
And finally the thief unveiled

“Aha!” cried the detective
“Mom, I knew it’d be you.”
“The no-dessert-before-dinner rule
applies to you too!”
